Winter Ski Season Started 8th December 2011!

This year's winter season has started today, with Hochfugen opening for the first time this year. Greg is up there with our first customers for a day's skiing. As well as Hochfugen, Hochzillertal and some of the other resorts in the valley are also opening today. Snow has come slightly later than previous years, but we're hoping that this will mean more snowfall during the season!!

British Disabled Ski Team - Training in Hintertux, Austria

The BDST development team are back in Hintertux over the next couple of weeks.
The team are under the guidance of two new coaches so I am sure there will plenty of excitement for them.
Redpoint have again organised the Travel, Transfers and Accommodation for the team to take some of the stress out of the trip for the organisers. The partnership has now lasted over 5 yrs and we are looking forward to seeing some of the development team moving onto the National team and then hopefully the Olympics.

BASI Trainers Conference - Hintertux Austria

The British Association of Snowsport Instructors had the annual Trainers conference in Hintertux again this year.
After the successfull completion of the Instructor training courses in May the trainers selected Hintertux as the venue for this years conference.
Some of the trainers have spent over 6 weeks in Hintertux this year providing training for up and comming Snowsport Instructors.
Redpoint have again been asked to provide a package of Travel, Transfer and Accommodation for the students and Trainers. The courses and location have beeen well received and we are looking forward to them returning in Aprill 2012.

Family Activity Holiday Austria - Paragliding

We abandoned the mountainbiking today as the wind looks like it is going to be to strong to Paraglide on Friday.

Ben has almost completed the Families activity holiday in Austria and they will be leaving on Saturday. Just in time as the weather looks like it is changing on Saturday to be a little wetter! It will make a nice change from the week of 30 degrees temps we have been having.

White Water Rafting for the family - Austria

Family rafting today was great fun.
Quite challenging with 5 Italians so the guiding was a good laugh, we all got the hang of it and we even managed to sing to the tourists as we floated past Rattenburg.
Our guests are at the front of the boat they all seem to be smiling so that’s gotta mean they are having a good time.
Family white water rafting is suitable for kids from 6 yrs and up (of course adults are welcome to join the fun)
Looks like a nice walk along Lake Achsensee tomorrow.

Family Biking Day Fantastic summer weather!

A fantastic blue sky day today, but not too hot as yet, so perfect for a bike ride. Cycling through the forest and along the riverside path to the lake.... followed by a picnic, swim and sunbathe for the aftenoon at the lakeside.
Just off to get skis hired in time for Glacier Skiing tomorrow.... hopefully it'll be another glorious day so that we can get the views over the moutain ranges from the top.

Family Summer Activity Week started

We began the week with the weather clearing and the forecast good for at least the next few days. The first day was a Walk in Hochfugen, hearing the cows with bells and crossing the ski pistes, seeing how different it looks in the summer! A great way to get acclimatized to being in the mountains.
It's biking tomorrow...weather sounds good so maybe a swim in the lake at the end of the bike ride.

The BASI groups started up in Hintertux this week, with new instructors taking one or two week courses. With plenty of fresh snow up on the glacier, the weather is cold and unsettled, but means good snow on the pistes (for the time of year...)

"Hi, my name is Dave and I’m about to embark on a 192 mile walk (Wainwright’s Coast to Coast Walk) to raise money for Disability Snowsport UK with my friend Gilly Fraser. We hope you are in a generous mood because we are looking to raise £5,000 for Disability Snowsports UK (DSUK) which as you probably know is a charity that enables all disabled people no matter what the disability to ski. We set off on the 24th July and finish on the 7th August.

What we want most of all from you is your money, no point beating about the bush about it is there! On most days we will be walking about 12 miles and taking all day to do it so we are not going to be going at a mad pace, not that either of us could anyway. Summer Season Starting!

Plenty of snow has arrived in time for the resorts to open for the winter season. Hochfuegen opened at the end of November, followed closely by Hochzillertal and then Spieljoch. Steve and the boys, seen here skiing, have already been out for a week enjoying the fresh snowfalls every day.

Hochfugen opened for the season on the 20th November again this year. It is now open until the 1st May, probably one of the longest seasons in Europe. Fresh snow this week and very cold temperatures are meaning skiing is excellent. Most of the rest of the resorts are opening in the Zillertal this weekend 27/11/10.
At the moment Christmas is looking very quiet why not take advantage of some fantastic conditions and join us for an early season ski break.

Over 1 meter of snow fell during the day on Monday in Hintertux.
We are up there as Redpoint are providing Accommodation and travel assistance to the British Disabled Development Ski Team.
we had a bit of excitement getting up the road, it was the first time putting the chains on since last winter but Steve lead the way getting the rust off them for me! Great news for an early start to the winter as this was at 1500m the same height as Hochfugen.

Redpoint Team Conference October 2010

The Redpoint Team had their annual conference day at the Mariott Hotel in Birmingham in preparation for the coming Winter season. Topics discussed included the launching of the Disabled Holidays Booklet and the Taster Ski Weeks, to encourage more people with disabilities to try skiing. The Summer brochure is currently being designed to launch in January 2011 and with Winter bookings entering peak booking time, there are a lot of exciting events coming up. The new face on the team this winter is Claire Goulden, who joins us whilst Ines goes on maternity leave in November. In resort, preparations for the season are well underway, we have two new members on the team; Scott Taylor and Ellis Fuller who will be working alongside Steve and Eddy.

Early snow in Austria - It is snowing down to 1400m

Just an update from Fugen on the weather.
Last week it snow over a meter on the Glacier.
Today it is snowing down to 1400m in Fugen so below the bottom of Hochfugen.
looks like it will continue over the week end.
Photos will follow, when the cloud lifts!
Looks like the early skiing will be good, I think the early ski weekend will book up nicely.

Last week Greg and Nina visited the offices of BASI (British Association of Snowsports Instructors) in a beautifully restored building in Grantown on Spey. With preparations for the winter season well underway, discussion included employing BASI qualified instructors for the winter season as well as organizing the Accommodation, Lift Pass and Transfers packages for BASI students travelling to Hintertux for the Spring Courses. Learn to ski - tip 3

Tip 3 Get the right group

My last tip stressed how much better it is learning in a group, but it's important to make sure that the tuition is pitched at the right level. Even if you have had a couple of lessons at an indoor slope, you should start with other beginners as skiing outside is a different experience - and much more beautiful. Some ski schools offer a varying quality of tuition, but because Redpoint employ their own instructors, all tuition is carefully organised at the right level for the individual with an English speaking instructor with lots of experience - and patience!

I found learning to ski quite hard physical work, so be prepared. I was pleased that Redpoint organise their lessons in 1.5 hour slots in the morning and afternoon. That gives you plenty of time to practise, rest eat lunch and if you're like me, grab a small refreshing beer.

Redpoint's learn to ski weeks run throughout the season and prices start from £686 per adult including tuition, boot and ski hire and a 3 day lift pass.

Tip 2. Don't go it alone - private tuition might sound like a good way to go but learning to ski in a group is much more fun. I was worried that I would be the only one who wouldn't get it right, but my instructor Steve had endless patience with us. You also have the support of other beginners as well as someone to help pick you up when you fall over! It's hard work, but great fun and learning alongside other people gives you someone to laugh with. Here's Caroline - my fellow beginner.

Learning to ski can be a daunting prospect as I know from personal experience when Redpoint taught me to ski last year. But if you are thinking of taking a learn to ski holiday, I can't recommend Redpoint highly enough. To help you out, I've put together some tips to think about if you are planning your first learn to ski holiday.

Tip 1. Choose a company that can organise all the tricky stuff for you like ski passes, hiring equipment, organising lessons etc. It's often cheaper to book it before you go and it's certainly less hassle in resort. The lovely people at Redpoint took me everywhere I needed to go and sorted it all out for me - all I had to do was turn up!

We had a great day today White Water Rafting with a small elite team of paddlers - we kept our guide happy by working hard! Great fun, great people and great waves - a brilliant day!
The group are out here for Peter's 50th Birthday (tomorrow!) His birthday wish is to be at the top of the Hintertux Glacier, so we want to be the first to wish him a very happy birthday and look forward to skiing up on the Glacier with him tomorrow (watch this space!)

White Water Swimming , Austria Activity Holiday

We went white water swimming on Thursday evening through an amazingly beautiful canyon called the Kaiserklamm. It was such a hot day that this was the best way to cool down! The water was perfect, not too high, which meant a lot of swimming and not much scrambling was needed. You could slide through the natural waterways carved into the canyon. And looking up from the water at the rocky sides of the canyon is an amazing experience and a rare sight.

Visit to the Hintertux Glacier - Skiing all year round - even in the summer!

On Wednesday we went to the very top of the Hintertux Glacier, taking all 3 gondolas up to 3250 meters. Although it was really hot in the valley, the cloud was just sitting over the very top and it was freezing! Incredible to go from around 35 degrees down to 1 degree at the top in only half an hour! Needless to say, we didn't hang about too long at the top, but made our way back down to the next level, where the sun was shining and we watched the skiers coming down. Incredible to see how many people were skiing in the heat wave in July! It's an experience not to be missed, so look out for summer skiing in the new Redpoint Summer Brochure!

Innsbruck Excursion

We took a day out in Innsbruck at the old town, with the famous Golden Roof in the background. We visited the Ski Jump first, before coming down to the old town to walk around admiring the old buildings and popping in to a few shops, too!
Innsbruck is a beautiful historic town and the ski jump is well worth a visit, as the view from there is really spectacular - ask about it when you book your next Redpoint Holiday!

White Water Rafting at Imst

Monday was a good day for White Water Rafting - the rain disappeared and it turned into another hot day. It was great fun, although we didn't get any action photos to show for it this time. Everybody said they wanted to go again the next day, so it must've been good fun!

Evening Entertainment - Village Concert and Tyrolean Evening

Every week the local village band (who are amazingly professional and quite a bit orchestra really - it's a very talented place full of musicians!) hold a concert in the village hall.
The hall is a bit like a Beer Festival atmosphere, with long tables and big busty bar maids serving large mugs of beer, but at the same time the band played a really varied musical reportoire from the usual brass band marching tunes to some Jazz and funky beats... we had a really good evening out and are looking forward to the Tyrolean Evening on Thursday, where the traditional Austrian tunes come out and there is more yodelling and folk dancing on show.

It all started off pretty much as normal, with everybody getting kitted out in their wet suits and grabbing their tubes. At the river, instructions were given and it was time to jump in the water and have a go! No-one expected such an extreme ride as the heavy rain came down so hard - making the river so dramatic! It was just a summer shower that cooled the air nicely - but what timing! The adrenaline was flowing as fast at the river!

Feeling slightly stiff on Sunday after our big trek the day before, we decided to go to Lake Achensee for a lovely lakeside trek to loosen off! There are about 100 steps to climb, as well as the path winding up and down, so it didn't feel too leisurely and the legs certainly felt the stepping down, but was very picturesque and scenic, with a cool breeze coming off the lake and lots of kayakers, kite surfers, boats and swimmers to watch.

With fantastic weather conditions, Rosie and I decided to go for a big high alpine walk to the Kellerjoch hut and then even further up to Kuhmesser, before taking the spectacular route down overlooking Hochfugen. Family Cycling to the Lake "Schlitterersee"

On Friday, we got up early (before we got too hot!) to cycle along the riverside path to the nearby lake. It was lovely on the shady path, with the trees and the river giving a cool breeze. The heatwave has been amazing - in the last week it has reached temperatures of 38 degrees! So shade and water have been very appealing! The day was spend sunbathing and swimming in the lake, with a picnic lunch, before cycling back home to Fugen.

White water rafting - face the fear

River rafting is included in the Redpoint family activity holiday package. I admit I was a bit nervous, but hard as I tried, I couldn't persuade Greg to let me go on the more sedate family course suitable for children over 6 - right up my alley! Instead, we headed to the River Imst to try our hand at a grade 3 white water rafting river. Togged up in our lovely wetsuits, we looked like the (unfit) extras from a James Bond film. After a thorough safety briefing from Greg, we set off down the river for one and half hours of pure excitement with Steve and Jonny at the helm. This was one activity that I was really worried about, but it actually proved to be great fun and a real team building activity - in fact, I enjoyed it so much I'd definitely do it again. Bring on the inner tubing.....

Two wheels and a gel seat

Equipped with a comfy gel seat and a pair of padded cycling trousers I was all set for the mountain biking. Greg showed us the proper way to go up and down a hill on a mountain bike - which came in mighty handy once we hit the trails! After a quick practice in the playground we were ready to head off along the fantastic cycle trail in Fugen and beyond. Didn't get photos of the rafting, but we made a video instead, it was great fun! Even the most apprehensive members of the team had a great time once we got in the water! The weather was great, the water level was perfect for a fun ride down and it really was a great bonding experience!

An session in the Conference Room kept us busy in the afternoon before heading out into the village to see the bars and restuarants. After a quiet drink at one of the new restaurants, we went for an evening at Hotel Edelweiss, a really traditional restaurant in Fuegen and had a fabulous meal! The team headed over to Hochfugen for the afternoon to do the "Family Guided Walk" that we usually offer as part of the Family Activity Holiday Programme.

It was fun to see the ski pistes without the snow and everyone paused to look down the black run - did it look steeper in the summer?!
We heard the cow bells (and later the cows!) and saw the pink Alpenrose, although most of them had yet to bloom.

Day 1 began meeting up at the airport very early in the morning and flying over to Munich.

Greg met the team at the airport with the Redpoint Minibus. They took the scenic route back to Fuegen over the mountain Lakes "Tegernsee" in Bavaria and "Achensee" in the Tyrol and stopped a couple of times to look at the fantastic views!
The weather was hot and sunny and the scenery looked amazing the whole way to Fuegen.

There is a National Express tommorrow from London 14.30 arriving Munich Monday 12.00 returning 20th April 16.45 arriving 11.45 on the 1st, cost £94.

Also there are coaches going from Munich to London, see www.eurolines.com.

Iceland Volcano update:

There was a large volcanic eruption in Iceland on Wednesday April 14.

Due to the weather conditions, a plume of volcanic ash has now spread southwards towards northern Europe and is severely affecting all airlines' flight activity in the area

Airspace over Birmingham, Manchester, Edinburgh and the Stavanger (Norway) is already closed. Oslo will only be open for a few hours. London airports anticipate closing from 11.30 GMT 15th April for the rest of the day.

It is expected that the cloud is moving on towards Sweden, Finland and Denmark during the course of the day.

At this stage the airlines do not have any updates for flights travelling from this weekend onwards, it is expected that the Cloud is moving East and UK airports hope to back in service as quickly as possible. We have been working closely with the airlines and will keep all guests up do date with any possible changes to their flight arrangements.

On my third day I tried out Speiljoch A great place to really experience the freedom of the slopes, its rolling hills allow you to let yourself go and try out new techniques without the fear of being near the edge! I loved this ski area and would definately recommend it to beginners and intermediates looking to improve on their skills.

Enjoying some time away from the office with Greg, rarely done when fitting in teaching, evening walks and nights out with guests to the local bowling, or toboganning. Such a busy day!

Luke and Mikey went up to the Hunter's Lodge for a traditional evening of Tyrolean music and dance; with plenty of yodelling, schnapps drinking and men in Lederhosen slapping their thighs!
The boys were more interested in the busty bar maid than the men in leather shorts and couldn't leave without a picture with the hunting collection.

The last day of ski lessons was a snowy, foggy day. Luke managed to get off the beginner slopes and up the t-bar onto the blue run, whereas Mikey stuck to the beginner area and the button lift.
Both Luke and Mikey say they enjoyed their skiing experience.
I think they will miss their Strudel lunches when they get home!

Another fantastic blue sky day with amazing snow on the slopes for the Big Brother stars.
They have both been up the button lift a number of times and can ski back down the slope.
Luke is now able to ski down quite quickly and independently of instructor Steve, whereas Mikey is still reliant on Dave to help him to finish his turns and keep his speed under control.
More work on the snow plough was needed today for Mikey, but it is definately coming together well and both Mikey and Luke are beginning to feel what it's like to be skiers!
It's the last day of lessons tomorrow, so it will be interesting to see if they can both ski completely independently by the end of the day.

Luke Marsden Learn to Ski - Day 3

Luke's skiing progressed quickly today. After his first go up the button lift this morning, he went on to do another 10 runs on the slope today.
With only a few falls, by the end of the day Luke could ski the beginner slope and go up the button lift independently.
Mikey will have to work hard tomorrow to catch up with Luke, who has really begun to get the hang of skiing today.

Mikey Hughes Learn to Ski - Day 3

After a morning of practice at the bottom of the slope, turning left and right when instructed, Dave decided that Mikey was ready for the button lift in the afternoon.
Going up on the button lift and skiing back down the beginner slope meant that Mikey was catching up with Luke, who was skiing on this same beginner slope today.
Luke is winning the race for the most runs on the button lift, but is also the top of the leader board for the number of falls!

Luke's second day on the slope started with some extra tips from Greg to get his snow plough to work. Controlling the speed and slowing down to a stop was the name of the game. After many attempts, stopping was becoming easier, so instructor Steve moved on to turns... Would Luke be able to turn left and right as well as Mikey did? Who would get up on the lift first to go from the top of the slope? Watch this space...

Mikey Hughes Learn to Ski - Day 2

Mikey's second day on the slopes started with a telling off from Instructor Dave for being late! Early mornings are the best times to be on the slopes in this awesome weather and Dave wanted to Mikey to make the most of it.

Mastering the snow plough was the theme of the day; turning the tips of the skis together and backs of the skis out evenly to come to a gradual stop.

Turning proved a bit harder to get the hang of, with Dave shouting left and Mikey turning right, which resulted in a bit of a fall. This was soon forgotten once turning right (pressing on the left ski) and turning left (by pressing on the right ski) was practised a few more times!

After the session Dave, Mikey and Greg (owner of Redpoint) spent time commenting on Luke's progress... would his snow plough be better than Mikey's? Who would go to the lift first?

The first day on the ski slopes has gone really well for Mikey, he has come out with a great attitude towards learning to ski and is determined to beat Luke Marsden up to the top of the lift! Both Big Brother housemates are out learning to ski this week. Redpoint has made availible one of their most experienced adaptive instructors, who has taught many visually impaired skiers, to help Mikey beat Luke to the top! With already fierce competition, Mikey couldn't help but point out at the end of the day that Luke had fallen over several times under Steve's instruction - whereas he'd not fallen over once with Dave, so he feels confident as we go in to Day 2....

Learn to Ski Week in Austria with Luke Marsden from Big Brother

Here's this week's Learn to Ski and Return to Ski Week groups, with instructor Steve (Left) and Luke Marsden (Big Brother) in the middle. The groups did really well today, with the Learn to Skiers grasping the elementary skiing skills (sliding, walking up, falling over, getting up, snow ploughing and also some turning!) It was great fun and everybody had grins on their faces throughout the day. The weather was fantastic and the snow was great, so what more could you ask for on your first day's skiing?!

We left her still practising her newly learnt turns this afternoon - she may well be the last one off the slopes tonight with all that enthiusiasm!
